It’s almost a new year, and that means new possibilities across the board. Here at Fresh Beards, we’re most excited about beard possibilities! A new year can mean a new you, and what better way to start off on the right foot than with a new beard and revamped care routine? Setting a resolution to up your beard game can be a fun challenge, and now is the time to get started. If you’re ready to tackle some big grooming goals this year, these tips can help you get off the ground and start making your way towards success. This year, try resolving to:
Wash, Not Overwash
The hair on your face needs to be clean, just like the hair on your head, but overwashing can be just as bad as not washing at all. Lathering up your facial hair too often will dry out your hair and skin, stripping them of the natural oils that your body produces. This can result in dry, brittle, scratchy and flaky beards. It can also swing the other way, triggering your skin to over-produce oil and leading to a greasy, congested, and uncomfortable feeling on your face and beard! Washing your facial hair more than once or twice a week is really only necessary if you’re highly active and sweat often, or if you work a very dirty job. Otherwise, keep those washes regular, but minimal!
Maximize Moisture
Making sure that you pack hydration into your beard and mustache is more important now, in the winter, than any other time of the year. If you aren’t regularly moisturizing with a beard balm, butter, or oil, you might not even realize how dry, brittle, and unruly your facial hair is, but once you start to address the problem, you’re sure to notice the difference! If you want maximum hydration, go with an oil or a butter that will soak your beard in nourishing ingredients. If you’re a minimalist and want a product that can multitask, choose a balm that offers a light hold as well as moisture!
Get Timely Trims
Even if you like the look of a longer beard or are actively trying to grow your beard out, getting regular trims is important for making sure your facial hair looks and feels its best. The ends of your hair strands are older than the roots, making them drier, more brittle, and more likely to break. This causes you to lose length and lose it unevenly, making for a scraggly, untidy beard. To keep that messy look at bay and encourage your hair strands to stay healthy and long, trim the ends off frequently! If you wear your facial hair shorter, regular shaping trims are just as important to keep everything looking just right.
Show Care for Your Hair
If your beard is long enough to get a brush or a comb through, you should be doing so on a regular basis– at least once a day is ideal. However, the way you use these tools matters if you want to maintain health and length for your facial hair! Roughly ripping at your hair from the root is just going to break the strands, exacerbate tangles, and hurt to do. Take the time to detangle your beard out carefully with a comb, not a brush, starting at the ends and teasing out tough spots slowly instead of yanking. Then, use a brush to distribute the oils of your skin (or your favorite beard oil) along the strands and to shake out dirt and other particles that might be hiding in there. A few minutes of attention at night is better than multiple careless, damaging combing sessions a day!
Upgrade Those Products
Your body reflects what you fuel it with– when you nourish yourself with healthy foods and plenty of water, you feel better and do better at the things you love. The same is true for your facial hair! If you’re feeding it poor quality products, it will never look and feel as good as it could if you were using products full of quality ingredients instead.
