The Top 5 Beard Grooming Mistakes That Rookies Always Make

on

Growing an impressive face-warmer is a sacred process. It takes dedication, care, diligence, and patience to truly grow a good beard. As many beard pros know, the best thing you can to properly sustain your beard growth is to groom it properly.

That said, there are various problems you may run into along the way, especially if you’re preparing to set forth on your first-ever beard journey. Of course, that’s nothing to be ashamed of.

Every impressively bearded gentleman has made their fair share of mistakes along the way, and we’ve compiled their wisdom here to help guide on the proper path. Without further ado, here are the top five beard grooming mistakes that rookies always make.

5. Washing Incorrectly

Proper washing is a fundamental part of any beard care routine. This is especially true if your job requires you to work outside, as dust, dirt, and sweat can all get trapped in your facial hair. Even if you work inside, you should still wash your beard thoroughly and with regularity.

Unfortunately, a lot of guys make the mistake of using the same shampoo they use on their head-hair on their facial hair as well. This is less than ideal.

The problem with that habit is that head-hair shampoo can often strip your beard of its natural oils, leaving the skin beneath unmoisturized. In turn, this can leave your skin feeling dry, itchy, or painful.

Using a specially formulated beard wash product, such as these, can be exceptionally beneficial in eliminating this problem.

4. Overtrimming or Shaving Too High on the Neckline

Careful trimming is just a fact of life for beard growers, but keeping it consistent is the real trick. Unless you're shooting for a long and wild look, you should always take some time to keep your facial hair properly shaped on your face.

The simplest and most common mistake you can make is trimming off too much, too soon. If you're trying to add length to your beard, we recommend growing without trim for up to 90 days. If you happen to notice significant fly-away hairs along the way, go ahead and trim those, but be careful not to overdo it.

Once you reach 90 days, you can go ahead and do some light shaping to even everything out. If you want it even longer, just repeat this process until you’ve reached your desired length.

In addition, one of the best ways to add shape to your beard is to properly define your neckline. If you’re shooting for a thicker, fuller look, be careful not to shave the neckline too high. Usually, just above the Adam's apple is the perfect spot to keep it.

3. Neglecting to Brush It Properly

As many young beard students know, brushing your beard out can often seem unnecessary. Surely, all you have to do is let your beard grow and the rest will come naturally, right?

Wrong! In order to keep your beard looking Fresh, you must brush it carefully and lovingly on a daily basis. This will not only keep your beard looking neat and tidy, but it will also help you distribute beard oils (both natural and additional) throughout your facial hair, training your hairs to flow downward rather than outward.

When just starting out, it can be beneficial to make use of a high-quality beard comb before graduating to a nice brush the longer it gets.

2. Giving Up Too Soon

Growing a truly magnificent beard can sometimes be a long and arduous quest, and we’ve all been there. We’ve all had a few weeks, or even a month or so of growth and thought to ourselves “this isn’t working, I just don;t have the skills.”

But fret not dear beard-seeker! The secret is simply to let your beard walk before it can run. Be sure to always give a newborn beard enough time to reach its full potential. Don’t let your own impatience ruin the possibility of a glorious Zeus-like face-warmer.

At Fresh Beards, we always recommend waiting at least two-three months before truly assessing your status. Sure, that seems like a long time, but trust us! We’ve seen even the patchiest beards become much happier after letting it grow for a while. You may be surprised to see the transformation!
