This February, romance is in the air, and everybody deserves to feel the love. This includes both you and your beard! If you have a big date coming up for Valentine’s Day, (or you just feel like giving yourself a little extra TLC) paying attention to your facial hair can make you look and feel your best. If you want your beard to really wow this year, don’t start prepping on Valentine’s Day– lay out a plan now to whip it into the best possible shape! Here’s a schedule of beard care that you can follow to ensure that you’re ready to impress by February 14th.
A Week Before: Moisturize
Right now in the depths of winter, many people's skin and hair deal with a one-two punch of dryness. Outside, the cold air and biting winds can create chapped, red, irritated skin and tangled hair, but inside, the artificial heating sucks away humidity, robbing even more moisture from the exterior of the body. This means that whether or not you notice it, there’s a good chance that your beard is very dry right now!
Tackle this problem with extra hydration well in advance of the big night. At least a week beforehand, start treating your beard nightly with oils or butters that provide deep moisturization to soak in while you sleep. During the day, consider a beard balm to provide lighter hydration as well as a little styling hold, and remember to drink plenty of water so that you’re adding moisture back to your beard from the inside out!
A Few Days Before: Trim
Trimming and shaping your beard or mustache is an absolute must if you want it to look its best, but the day right before a big date or other event is not the time to do it. You always run the risk of a trim not looking or lying quite right, and even if your tidy-up goes perfectly, it’s still good to have a little time to readjust to the new length and shape of your beard so that you can be more comfortable styling it the day of. Shoot for three to four days out for your trimming day, and save any close-shaving touchups for the day of the date so that you can bust the stubble!
The Day Before: Wash
Washing your facial hair so that it’s clean, fresh, and tidy is an absolute must before anything where you want to look and feel your best, be it a dinner date or a major work presentation. However, it’s probably not something that you’ll want to do on the big day itself. You won’t want to run the risk of your beard taking longer to dry than you thought it would, and men with longer beards will know the horror of having your facial hair dry in a weird shape right before something important! Instead, grab your favorite beard wash the night before to give yourself time to work out any issues. You’ll still be fresh and clean the next day!
The Day Of: Scent
Using scents that you love in your facial hair is a great treat for yourself, and its appeal to the people around you is a definite bonus! Finding a fragrance that works for you and conveys the message that you want it to can be a bit of a process, so if you’re looking for a shortcut, look for scents that share the same notes as your favorite cologne to ensure everything blends nicely and smells just right for you. A product like a beard oil that carries a light fragrance will be perfect to have your beard looking great!
